Gender and Victimization by Strangers: The Differential Impact of Race, Place and Class

Wed, Nov 15, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Marriott, Room 403, 4th Floor

Abstract

Victimization by strangers constitutes a very significant portion of both women’s and men’s victimization. Yet, there are few quantitative studies of stranger violence against women, and we know almost nothing about how the covariates of stranger violence may vary across gender. Urban residence, race and poverty all are important covariates of both male and female violent victimization, however, we have little information about whether these factors affect the risks of stranger violence similarly or differently for women and men. This paper pools micro data from the NCS and NCVS for the years 1980 through 2015 for females and males to assess gender differences in the conditional effects of race, place and class on violent victimization.
