Thu, Nov 16, 7:15 to 8:15pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon E, 5th Floor

Abstract

Previous evidence have demonstrated that victims and aggressors present different emotional profiles regarding Bullying. These studies have focused on adolescents, yet there are few reports analyzing this phenomenon in younger populations. Some studies indicated that elementary school harassment surpasses those detected in high school.

The focus of this study was to analyze the emotional characteristics of children implicated in bullying.
Objective : analyze the emotional profile of children implicated in bullying.

Sample: 291 children ages 8-11 years.

Emotional Intelligence was evaluated with the BarOn ICE:NA Emotional Inventory and bullying with the Bull-S Test.
Results confirmed the high prevalence of Bullying in this age group (18% aggressors and 12% victims), being the boys the gender that more frequently assumes the role of aggressor (90%) and victims (67%).

After analyzing the variances of the samples and confirm the level of significance (<0.05), it was confirmed that aggressors had lower Global Intelligence scores, as well as in Interpersonal dimensions and Stress Management. Furthermore, the victims presented lower scores in these dimensions, compared to observers, although higher than aggressors.

Conclusion, the role of Emotional Intelligence in elementary-school children implicated in Bullying is relevant, therefore requiring prevention strategies to be developed for this age group.
