Risk Terrain Modeling: A Tool for Crime Prevention & Reduction in New York City?

Abstract

This project explores the validity and reliability of risk terrain modeling (RTM) in New York City. Studies of other urban areas indicate that environmental and sociodemographic factors influence the future occurrence of certain types of criminal events, but it remains to be seen whether comparable patterns are evident in New York City. This study merges data on crime complaints from the NYPD with data on environmental and sociodemographic factors (such as the location of public housing and bus stops) from a variety of sources to test the validity of the RTM approach in New York City. The findings will inform policing practices and other crime reduction strategies.
