Evaluating the Effects of Community Policing on Perceived Disorder in a Developing Nation

Abstract

Community policing efforts incorporate a variety of tactics and strategies in an effort to reduce crime and victimization, reduce disorder, and reduce fear of crime in troubled communities. Most of the evaluation research on the effects of community policing has been concentrated in the U.S. and other developed nations. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study examines whether the implementation of a community policing program that emphasized a problem-oriented policing approach reduced perceived disorder in a distressed Caribbean community. We use a pre-post, comparison group design with two groups. Data are based on three waves of citizen surveys carried out in both groups.
