Immigrants, Refugees, and Crime – What are the Connections?

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between immigrants, refugees, and crime. Using data for the years of 1980 to 2010 from United States Census, American Community Survey (ACS) and the United States Department of Justice, this paper discusses whether immigrants and refugees are engaged in crime as it is commonly believed. The data indicate that immigrants and refugees are less crime-prone than the native-born population. Current policies and executive order regarding immigration and refugees are discussed.
