Family Socialization: Creation of Positive/Negative Perception of Police Officers Among College Students

Thu, Nov 16, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Room 303, 3rd Floor

Abstract

A vast literature examines juvenile and adult interaction and attitudes towards law enforcement. However, limited studies have examined how parent’s conversations with children about interactions with the police impact children’s opinions about law enforcement. While it appears that many African American/Black parents have conversations (also known as “the talk”) with their children about how to interact with police officers, little is known about other ethnic groups parenting patterns in this area. Using a sample of college students at two urban universities, this study aims at filling this gap in knowledge about (1) what parents of different ethnicity and immigrant background talk to their children about interacting with the police, and (2) how this talk impact the sampled students opinions about the police.
