Terrorist Ideology and Behavior in the Middle East and South Asia

Abstract

This project explores the distribution of terrorist ideologies and behavior in different regions of the world, specifically the Middle East and North Africa and South Asia. Prior research has shown that terrorist incidents are geographically concentrated, and remains so over time. This project endeavors to determine whether the type of terrorist behavior endures over time. This paper will also determine the ideologies of terrorist actors in specific regions over time, and the types of terrorist acts of these ideologies’ actors over time. Using the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) a database and a database of terrorist ideologies of my own making, I will determine the types of terrorist ideologies in these regions over time, the behavior of actors of different ideologies over time. This work will help us understand the impact of ideology on terrorist behavior in specific geographic and chronological context.
