The Varying Effects of Prison Program Combinations on Inmate Misconduct and Subsequent Returns to Prison

Abstract

This paper focuses on expanding the research related to the impact of varying levels of treatment dosage for inmates. Although research on treatment dosage indicates that programs providing higher levels of dosage to high-risk offenders result in reductions in recidivism for these offenders, relatively little research has examined dosage in terms of combinations of programs that target varying criminogenic need areas. We compare inmates who participated in different combinations of treatment programs in their odds of engaging in various forms of misconduct as well as their odds of returning to prison after release. The sample for this study includes adult male and female inmates across all Ohio state prisons. Results are assessed in terms of the current state of the treatment dosage research and the programs available to inmates with multiple criminogenic needs.
