Mediation in Police Community Relations: Promises and Challenges

Abstract

Proposals for improving strained police community relations have included a wide range of suggestions. Missing from the is mediation, a process that has the potential to offer essential techniques and skills to help build trust and rapport between police and their local communities. While a natural fit, the police context is also one of the most challenging for mediation. This presentation will examine the promises and challenges of mediation for contemporary policing.
