Introduction to the Report and Implications

• In Event: Presidential Panel: Proactive Policing: Effects on Crime and Communities (A Report of the National Academy of Sciences)

Abstract

This panel summarizes major findings from a National Academy of Sciences Committee on Proactive Policing. The Committee included leading experts from a diverse array of disciplinary backgrounds including David Weisburd (Chair), Hassan Aden, Anthony Braga, Jim Bueermann, Philip J. Cook, Phillip Atiba Goff, Rachel A. Harmon, Amelia Haviland, Cynthia Lum, Charles Manski, Stephen Mastrofski, Tracey Meares, Daniel Nagin, Emily Owens, Steven Raphael, Jerry Ratcliffe,and Tom Tyler (with Malay K. Majmundar as Study Director). The Report of the committee (Proactive Policing: Effects on Crime and Communities) examines evidence about proactive policing's impacts on crime and disorder; community attitudes, law and discrimination. This presentation introduces the charge of the committee, as well as the conceptual framework used to define proactive policing.
