Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
This roundtable will provide a forum for the discussion of research being undertaken by researchers from a number of different countries and continents who are part of an international network of prisoners’ families researchers. The participants will discuss their current research projects which cover a wide range of topics, including the intentional and unintentional consequences of punishment for families of those convicted of criminal offences; international perspectives on the management and evaluation of family reintegration post-imprisonment; the effect of social ties and family relationship on desistance from offending and community reintegration; the particular issues emerging in research among indigenous communities; communicating research findings to other criminal justice professionals; children’s rights and parental imprisonment; the connection between prison and society, as mediated through the experiences of children and partners visiting their incarcerated family members and the importance of moving beyond notions of collateral harms to prisoners’ families. The discussion will not be limited to the named participants - other members of the network will also be in attendance and will contribute to the discussions.
