Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
In October, Mount Saint Mary College presented a one-day conference, in connection with its Center for Adolescent Research and Development, titled “Restorative Justice: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline.” This event brought elementary school educators and administrators together with university academics and students to discuss a variety of issues related to the implementation of restorative justice practices in disrupting the school to prison pipeline. This roundtable seeks to build on those discussions, by focusing on the roles and ideas of relevant stakeholders and considering how this topic is situated in the broader context of restorative justice practice in the United States. More specifically, it aims to address overlapping challenges between K-12 disciplinary practices and the pipeline, higher education’s disciplinary processes, as well as offender recidivism. This roundtable seeks to discuss such questions as: What is the role of restorative justice in each of these environments? What are the roles of various stakeholders in this process? Who are the stakeholders in these processes? Where and how can restorative justice assist in mediating the long-term consequences of disciplinary and recidivism processes?
