This article examines and discusses the justifications for the persistence of the traditional and informal justice systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. It assesses why these systems persist in the region despite the adoption of western-style legal systems upon gaining independence since the 1960s and assesses their effectiveness in the administration of justice.
