Utilizing qualitative interviews and official data, this paper explores the factors related to successful reentry of long-term detainees and prisoners (also called persons restored of their liberties (PRLs) released from a mega jail and a mega prison in the Philippines. Specifically, this paper investigates social, cultural, and administrative factors that condition the experiences of the PRLs. Initial findings suggest that family ties, social connections, experiences while in jail or prison, condition their chances for successful reentry. Implications to policy and theory are discussed.
