This paper introduces a new National Institute of Justice-funded project that is investigating whether an automatic text notification system can be integrated with a behavioral health case management system to improve treatment uptake among probationers in North Carolina. We are working with Uptrust, a software development company, to develop an appointment reminder system that would be integrated into North Carolina’s Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC) case management system and be personalized for each client. For this paper, we will briefly describe literature on the use of mobile phone technology to improve treatment uptake, gaps in the literature, and current project goals and tasks. Depending on the success of this system in North Carolina, we are hoping that it could be scaled up to other jurisdictions and populations.
