Recent research has found that serious head injuries are associated with an array of negative outcomes, particularly in domains related to physical, mental, and emotional health. To date, very little research has examined the correlates and consequences of a head injury for adults involved with the criminal justice system. Furthermore, to our knowledge, no criminological research to date has focused on experiencing a head injury while imprisoned. Using a sample of 802 incarcerated males in Texas preparing for release, this study explores the associations between in-prison serious head injury and related health and criminal justice outcomes. Findings and policy implications for both correctional policy and public health are discussed.
