Recent statistics suggest there are over 6,400 craft breweries operating in the United States, and another several hundred breweries are projected to open within the next three years. Latest figures suggest on an annual basis, the craft beer industry has contributed billions of dollars to the economy. Despite being seen as a positive benefit to local communities, some scholars argue craft breweries contribute to gentrification. In this paper, we interviewed 27 craft brewers located in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions to understand how their brewery affects the local community. Participants reported their brewery is more than a social venue; it is a business promoting benevolence and supporting social causes within the community. Participants believed their brewery also lowered the frequency of crimes in the community. Although recognizing its social ills, craft brewers reported their brewery was contributing to gentrification.
