Violent crime rates have decreased since the early 1990’s. Despite this overall downward trend, homicide rates related to firearm violence remain high in some localities and for specific populations. NIJ has had a program of research related to firearms violence and firearms violence prevention since the 1980s. That program has focused on knowledge building, prevention/intervention program evaluation, legislative assessment and analysis of secondary firearms markets. The goal of this presentation is to discuss NIJ’s past and current efforts related to firearms violence and to put those in context of NIJ’s Reducing Violence Strategic Planning efforts.
