Division on Women and Crime Professional Development Panel: Visionary Thinking

Thu, Nov 14, 9:30 to 10:50am, Foothill G2, 2nd Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

This panel is suitable for mid-career feminists in social sciences who would like to develop a broader vision for themselves and the discipline. Drawing on the experiences of feminist leaders in academia it outlines career trajectories, contexts and backgrounds. In the process of doing so, this panel provides an inspirational picture of the future and a sense of direction on how to get there. This year’s discussion is being facilitated by Maureen O'Connor. Currently president of Palo Alto University in the Bay Area, Maureen directed the Doctoral Program in Psychology at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center and served as Chair of the Psychology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She completed a dual degree in Psychology, Law, and Policy at the University of Arizona, earning both her Ph.D. and J.D. She is a member of the bar in Arizona and Washington, D.C., and clerked for the Honorable Patricia Wald, then Chief Judge of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. She has held numerous governance positions in the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI/APA Division 9), including as President, and is currently serving on SPSSI’s Task Force on Engaged Scholarship.
