Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Research has revealed linkages between biological, psychological, and social health domains and the quality of life among vulnerable populations. However, these relationships remain relatively unexplored among individuals in correctional settings, such as jails and prisons. The current panel features new research developments regarding the antecedents, correlates, and consequences of health among currently incarcerated individuals. The research featured in the panel examines multiple mental and physical health factors among individuals in jails and prisons, including psychological trauma, substance abuse, head injury, and various chronic conditions. The findings, independently and as a whole, point to the continued need for research at the intersection of health and criminal justice in order to develop new policies and/or refine existing ones that ensure public safety while also promoting the health and well-being of justice-involved subsets of the population.
