NIJ Day: CSSI Research on the Impact of Emergency Preparedness on School Safety

Abstract/Description

The Federal Government, State School Safety Centers and local school districts all invest resources in providing guidance for emergency preparedness for schools. However, there is little empirical research to understand how K-12 schools utilize those resources, operationalize their emergency operations plans and communicate those plans to the school community. The goal of this panel is to present results from NIJ’s Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (CSSI) on emergency preparedness and school assessments and their impact on school safety. The first study examined the interrelationship between federal, state, district, and school orientations toward violent-emergency preparedness, identified exemplary sites with highly comprehensive violent-emergency plans and orientations, and described key challenges of developing high-quality emergency plans. The second study examined comprehension of violent event protocols among middle and high school students and staff; identified characteristics of schools that demonstrate strong EOP comprehension; identified characteristics of students and staff most in need of additional training; and made recommendations to school administrators for improving comprehension. The third study will discuss the level of implementation of safety and security measures in rural schools. The final presentation will discuss federal resources for helping schools develop effective emergency operations plans.
