Roundtable: Project Rebound: Building a Prison to College Pipeline through the California State University System

Sat, Nov 16, 9:30 to 10:50am, Golden Gate Salon B, Area 3, B2 Level

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract/Description

This roundtable will discuss the implementation and expansion of Project Rebound, a support program for formerly incarcerated students in the California State University (CSU) system. Started over 50 years ago at San Francisco State University by the late John Irwin, Project Rebound has in recent years expanded to nine other CSU campuses and is continuing to grow. The program entails outreach to prospective students in correctional facilities and in the community, assistance with admissions and financial aid applications, mentoring and guidance for students enrolled on campus, and the development of connections with community partners that can provide reentry assistance to students. The program subscribes to an ‘each one teach one’ motto, and building a holistic network of support is critical to its goals. We will discuss successes and challenges, program logistics and funding, ongoing evaluation, partnerships with correctional faculties, as well as plans for future growth.
