Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
The majority of statistics and information on crime and victimization are presented in binary, gendered, and heteronormative terms. Research on transgender and non-binary individuals may be increasing, but it is still largely absent from textbooks and official statistics that many instructors rely on in the classroom. While more common, scholarship on queer and LGB sexual identities is often relegated to a one-off lesson. This roundtable will discuss strategies to queering pedagogy, including syllabi construction, the importance of language and centering marginalized voices, inclusive assessments, establishing safe-environments, and managing resistance in the classroom.
