Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Victim service providers (VSPs) work within the criminal justice system, healthcare, communities, and campuses to deliver critical services, using a variety of mechanisms to assist victims of crime or abuse throughout the nation. This panel presents ongoing work at the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) to surmount historically pervasive data gaps on VSPs, the services they provide, and the victims who receive these services through a statistical research program. Results from the first ever National Census and Survey of Victim Service Providers (NCVSP/NSVSP), and from the OVC Performance Measurement Tool (PMT) will be discussed, including how these collections capture critical information on VSP structure, crime types served, services offered, funding, access and gaps in service. Panelists will highlight key findings, lessons learned, practical applications, and ways these programs can be enhanced moving forward to understand the diverse nature of VSPs.
