Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Understanding patterns and trends in crime and safety in the U.S. is of the utmost importance. The panel will present new developments in the nation’s two key crime measures through programs administered by the Department of Justice. Panelists will discuss work to produce direct and indirect crime estimates from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), led by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, as well as ongoing work on the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the new national standard for law enforcement crime data reporting in the U.S. The session will also cover important considerations for emerging opportunities to compare state-level crime data known to law enforcement through NIBRS and the NCVS.
