Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
State statistical analysis centers (SACs) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) are on the front lines in the effort to analyze NIBRS data to provide insights to policy makers and the public. As more agencies collect and submit NIBRS data, federal and state analysts are beginning to mine its capabilities to reveal new insights into crime, victimization, and clearances. The Justice Research and Statistics Association working group on NIBRS aims to compile and share lessons learned during the national shift to NIBRS. This panel will address BJS's efforts to create publicly available files for standardized analysis of NIBRS and showcase analytical work from the Georgia and Wisconsin SACs and BJS on topics NIBRS data are uniquely situated to address.
