This presentation will use the more than 20 years of data from the BJS Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) data collection to present trends in state law enforcement agencies from 1997 through 2020 and how these agencies compare to municipal and county law enforcement today. Specific topics include total personnel, race and sex of sworn personnel, functions of personnel, educational and training requirements for new recruits, budget, weapons and equipment authorized, and policies concerning vehicle pursuits and use of force. This presentation will show how these characteristics have changed in state law enforcement agencies over the past twenty years. It will compare state law enforcement agencies to municipal and county law enforcement.
