Background: Police-Juvenile Interactions (PJI) are intended to be pleasant and positive, without causing harm to either juvenile or officer. Research shows that favorable juvenile interactions with law enforcement may increase respect for the justice system and decrease delinquency. Nevertheless, some PJIs have resulted in fatalities or aggravated contact followed by restraint and violation of the human rights of the youth. Objective: This study intends to assess the police training curriculum relative to PJI and de-escalation techniques. Method: The study also intends to assess the types of PJIs and identify disparities in age, gender, race, ethnicity, and neighborhood characteristics. The theoretical framework will be established using the phenomenon of Procedural Justice and Legitimacy and Wilson's Policing Style Typology. The intent is to make recommendations based on the findings to improve PJI training protocols across police departments in the United States.
