Based on my experience collecting data from different Latin American countries—including interviews, surveys, and archival data—I discuss the challenges and advantages of publishing studies in journals based in English-speaking regions for Latin American doctoral students. These challenges include 1) higher standards when contextualizing studies conducted in Latin America 2) higher expectations when “making a case,” and 3) ethical and interpretative decisions in the translation of technical terms. Advantages include a growing interest in realities that are not accessible to English speakers by language limitations. I conclude by reflecting on the role of 1) doctoral faculty members in supporting the scholarship of Latin American and international graduate students 2) criminal justice and criminology journals when choosing peer-reviewers.
