The Vera Institute of Justice’s Redefining Public Safety (RPS) program presents recent research that demonstrates the limitations and harms of the overreliance on policing to produce public safety. Data and research are foundational to the conceptualization of a robust civilian public safety ecosystem, ultimately looking beyond law enforcement to define essential public safety agencies and functions. RPS’s research seeks to contribute to critical public questions concerning policing, transparency, and public safety. Cities can leverage Redefining Public Safety’s research and data tools to better understand opportunities for improvements to local public safety policy and practice.
