Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
In the United States, more agencies and governmental bodies are implementing and mandating sensitivity training for groups such as LGBTQIA+ and racial/ethnic minorities to better address the needs of those groups in criminal justice settings. These trainings, however, are not universal. Further, with legislature which targets these trainings, such as Florida's “Don’t Say Gay” and “Stop WOKE Act” laws, there is potential concern that certain locales will not only dismiss such trainings, but they may also be disallowed from implementing them in the future. This roundtable will: 1) Discuss how to obtain stakeholder support and consensus in developing sound training programs that can be regionally adaptable. 2) Seek to identify possible components and groups that should be included. 3) Reflect on the role of utilizing lived experience testimony in training with criminal justice professionals. 4) Finally, discuss future steps to assist criminal justice agencies in creating and implementing such programs within existing laws.
