Crime victim compensation programs are designed to provide financial assistance to victims of crime for expenses incurred as a result of the crime, such as medical care, funeral expenses, and lost wages. While each state has a crime victim compensation program, little is known about the states’ policies, practices, and implementation of these programs. This study aims to learn more about these programs by conducting a content analysis (n=50) of crime victim compensation programs’ application materials, websites, and guidance documents. Variables related to eligibility, available compensation, and required documentation were coded to analyze how these programs operate. Preliminary results indicate there is variation by state in the amount of compensation available, some states provide few details about eligibility, and variation exists for the maximum time in which someone can file for compensation following a crime. Implications of the preliminary findings suggest more information and transparency are needed about how these programs operate, particularly the eligibility requirements, to inform victims about these programs.
