Guided by Tyler's theoretical framework, this study is intended to describe the seemingly dichotomized realities of police legitimacy through the narratives of police officers and arrested youths. Using the data collected from the in-depth interviews with 40 arrested youths and 40 police officers, this presentation unpacks their lived experiences and interpretations of “fairness,” “voice”, “respect,” and “accountability” in different stages of police-youth encounters from stop-and-search to arrest and interrogation. This is one of the first to research police legitimacy from a comparative perspective and a process-based understanding.
