Immigration in Hungary: The Long View

Fri, November 18, 1:45 to 3:30pm, Wardman DC Marriott, Floor: Mezzanine, Thurgood Marshall South

Abstract

Immigration has recently put Hungary and its neighbors in the news. The 2015 refugee crisis drew world attention to “people smuggling” across the region. For decades, large numbers of migrants and refugees have been moving into and through Hungary. This paper views immigration in Hungary from the perspective of history. By surveying patterns of migration around 1900, it highlights the many forms of mobility within Hungary and between Hungary and its neighbors. My aim is to show the persistence of immigration into Hungary, the diverging responses to it, and the many paths taken by migrants once in the country.
