Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel will explore the state of inter-communal relations in the late Ottoman Aegean. In particular, the panel will investigate how "local" and "foreign" forces
(however these might be defined) came into contact and how they used a combination of violence and negotiation to secure their different goals. As elsewhere in Ottoman South Eastern Europe, the islands of the Ottoman Aegean were characterized by multi-ethnic populations and complex political relationships with the imperial government. Unlike much of this region, however, the Ottoman Aegean has been relatively neglected by scholars. The panel’s papers will thus not only contribute to the growing body of work on inter-communal relations in the late Ottoman Empire, but will also help to fill a gap in Ottoman (and Aegean) historiography.
