A Shelter to Cry In: Resiliency Among Romani Girls during the Holocaust in Romania

Thu, November 9, 5:00 to 6:45pm, Marriott Downtown Chicago, Floor: 3rd, Kane

Abstract

Key goals of this paper are to examine resiliency among Romani girls and women who were victims of the Holocaust in Romanian-controlled spaces. In this paper, I examine gendered experiences of Romani girls who shed their childhoods in Transnistria and faced extreme choices in a horrific genocide enacted against them. Using interview data, I explore the nexus of resiliency and culture and how they factored into girls’ survivorship.
