Locating Eastern European Experimental Cinema in the Socialist-Era Cultural Landscape

Sat, November 23, 2:00 to 3:45pm, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: LB2, Salon 6

Session Submission Type: Panel

Brief Description

The papers that make up this panel shed light on the complex "in-between" status of what we now understand to have been a thriving experimental film scene in socialist-era Eastern Europe. They examine the way makers of experimental films navigated the divisions between cinema, visual art, and literature; between existing technological media; between official institutions and unofficial cultural phenomena; and between geo-political divides (notably East and West) in order to produce some of the most daring examinations of film as medium and form made in the post-war period.
