The Imprints of Philanthropy: American Foundations in Eastern Europe during Communism

Tue, November 26, 10:00 to 11:45am, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: 4, Pacific F

Session Submission Type: Panel

Brief Description

The impact of philanthropy on contemporary international relations has lately been a much-discussed topic both in academia and the public press. Parallelly, a growing number of historical accounts are published on philanthropic foundations, however, these usually explore the activities of these organizations in Latin America, Africa and Asia. This panel is a first attempt to bring together scholars studying the complex dealings of American philanthropic organizations during Socialism in Eastern Europe. The papers explore the complex field the foundations needed to operate in, reveal the procedures they developed and the compromises they needed to make in order to assert influence in the region.
