Women Dissidents: Their Beliefs and Their Legacies

Tue, November 26, 10:00 to 11:45am, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: LB2, Salon 15

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Brief Description

This roundtable discusses actions, beliefs and legacies of women dissidents from Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Soviet Union. It focuses on what most of women -- who may be coined as dissidents -- have done in the past, and how it has affected their actions and civic attitudes after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and how these women contributed to creation of open society. The participants discuss: the state of knowledge about female dissidents, their beliefs and legacies; women dissidents’ operational frameworks and production of their knowledge back then and now; women dissidents’ current roles and actions as examples of civic perseverance, diligence, and fortitude -- qualities acquired in former oppressive circumstances, and in what ways women dissidents serve as inspiring examples to today’s grassroots movements. Roundtable explores women’s perspectives, seeks conversation and contributes to filling the gendered scholarship gaps.
