Intellectual and Aesthetic Sources of Eastern European Performance Art

Sun, November 24, 12:30 to 2:15pm, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Floor: B2, Walnut

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Brief Description

The roundtable gathers experts in performance art of Central and Eastern Europe and asks about the cultural and aesthetic premises performance artists were building upon during the 1960s and 70s. The goal is to identify, discuss, and compare particular sources that artists referred to and that therefore shaped the initiation and topics of early performances in different contexts. Sources can be found in references to art history – either through identification with or critique of earlier and/or contemporary artistic phenomena –, but also in broader cultural manifestations such as literature, film, music or philosophical movements.
