Session Submission Type: Panel
The papers that make up this panel shed light on the complex "in-between" status of what we now understand to have been a thriving experimental film scene in socialist-era Eastern Europe. They examine the way makers of experimental films navigated the divisions between cinema, visual art, and literature; between existing technological media; between official institutions and unofficial cultural phenomena; and between geo-political divides (notably East and West) in order to produce some of the most daring examinations of film as medium and form made in the post-war period.
Field Work: Kinolaboratorium as Experiment in Living - Eliza Rose, UNC at Chapel Hill
Works and Words, 1979: Eastern European Film and/as Art - Sonja Simonyi, Independent Scholar
Underground Film in Eastern Europe as a Cultural Practice during the 1960s-1980s - Tomas Glanc, U of Zurich (Switzerland)
