In this paper I consider Tolstoy's later writings in which he rewrites his own previous writings to critique the Russian Empire's imperial project. Specifically, I focus on Tolstoy's depictions of Russian emperor Nicholas I, Russian imperial violence, as well as imperial Russia's others, like Chechens, Avaris, and Poles. I address how the author's attitude toward these others changes over time, and how he uses his art to present an anti-colonial attitude countering tsarist Russia's imperial project.
