Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This roundtable examines approaches to selecting and highlighting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans* texts and experiences from Russia and Eastern Europe. Complex questions concerning canons, visibility, and representation arise whenever scholars face the need to choose subjects, texts, and movements for research and teaching. As queer studies within SEES steadily develops and as certain authors and places are prioritized over others, how do we grapple with organizing material that opposes the very idea of canonization? How do we recognize and remedy colonial tendencies in framing discussions of already marginalized cultural groups? In addition to theoretical considerations, this roundtable pursues practical goals. The participants will speak about their current projects in anthologizing, archiving, and translating queer voices. They will also address challenges with selecting case studies for research projects and talk about queer approaches to teaching Slavic and East European materials.
