Based on interviews with Buryat men fled to Mongolia to escape conscription in October 2022, this paper explores their reflection on their position at a time of great uncertainty. The different strands of Russian, Buryat and Mongolian identity were intertwined and many reflected upon their multifaceted sense of belonging. This paper presents the findings of these interviews, analysing the hybridity and ambiguity as experienced by my Buryat interlocutors.
