The High Cost of Low SES: Extracurricular Deficits of Low-Income Students

Thu, November 9, 3:45 to 5:00pm, Marriott Marquis Houston, Floor: Third, Meyerland A

Abstract

Socioeconomic status (SES) has an effect on collegiate extracurricular involvement. Using nested modeling techniques on the national longitudinal data, we find that students from low-income backgrounds are involved less, attend selective institutions at higher rates, and work more. This is of importance given the increased emphasis on extracurricular involvement.
