This study examined how STEM lab environments affected graduate students of color at two institutions. STEM labs were characterized as families, yet students of color often described them as isolating, dysfunctional, and competitive environments fueled by absent or ill-equipped PI’s. Consequently, students were forced to build their own support structures.
