Abstract

Immigration: Identity and Loss

AUTHOR: Marina De Simone Gomes

The themes of identity and loss affect any immigrant and can cause enormous impact in the process of adaptation. Some immigrants never overcome these difficulties. This presentation discusses these two key issues in my journey as a Brazilian immigrant woman in the United States. As a person that has trio citizenship (Brazilian, Italian, and American), I have had to negotiate different cultures, languages, and geographies. The subjects of cultural loss and identity formation permeate my five memoir essays in the bilingual book Entre-Between (Kotter Editorial, 2023), particularly “Between Two Tides” and “Mangiare per Vivere”. The exercise of writing these essays for the book Entre-Between (Kotter Editorial, 2023) has given me the tools to write and reflect upon my personal experience.
