Transformation of the higher education systems in Post-Soviet countries: The case of Latvia

Abstract

Two main objectives drive the project/chapter on Latvia: the first objective is to discuss higher education in Latvia before the USSR collapse; and the second objective covers the changes and transformations of higher education systems after the collapse of USSR.
As far as the first objective is concerned, the authors will focus on the socio-economic role and functions of higher education system within the Soviet Republic, any particular highlights of the system within the Soviet Republic, and the institutional diversity of these higher education systems.
The second objective will discuss and analyze factors that have influenced the changes and transformations of the higher education system within Latvia since the collapse of the USSR. Authors will pay close attention to internal and external factors. Along these lines, internal factors such as institutional diversity, system design, and internal institutional processes will be examined. External factors section will investigate issues that affected the Soviet higher education system and discuss up-to-date transformations that occurred within higher education system.
