Evoke: Literacy Campaign

Mon, March 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton Atlanta, Floor: 1, Capitol South (North Tower)

Proposal

The Evoke Literacy Campaign will leverage the Evoke platform and research from previous campaigns to not only build youth social innovation skills, but also build their knowledge of the importance of literacy and engage them in the quest for solutions to the global challenge of literacy. An engaging illustrated short story developed by a leading science-fiction author and set in the future guides agents as they embark their journey through 8 Missions and 48 activities. Activities are designed to encourage agents to engage with their community, understand challenges to literacy, think of solutions to solve the problems and implement them. The Literacy Campaign builds the four broad clusters of skills that are designated through badges and rewards: Creative Visionary; Deep Collaborator; Systems Thinker; and Empathetic Activist.
The Literacy Campaign also ensures that Evoke Agents gain specific understanding about what we know and understand is necessary for children to learn to read and read to learn (Gove and Cvelich, 2011). Each Mission will be accompanied by specific information to answer the following questions:
1. How do children acquire and improve their literacy skills?
2. How do children learn print skills?
3. How do children learn meaning making skills?
4. How can we know how well a child can read?
5. Which language should children learn to read in?
6. How could instructional time and reading time be increased?
7. What should parents do to prepare their children to learn to read and support their children while they are in learning to read?
Field testing of the Evoke Literacy Campaign will be conducted in South Africa, within the context of youth life skills programs and teacher training. The context and language and language are currently being contextualized for South Africa (short story, game mechanics, activities, and incentives). A team of experts will be evaluating the effectiveness of Evoke: Literacy through field testing with an initial plan to roll out in three countries.
