Philanthropy and the Changing Typology of Global Education

Wed, April 20, 6:00 to 7:30am CDT (6:00 to 7:30am CDT), Pajamas Sessions, VR 125

Proposal

With an interest in philanthropy in education as a case of wider changes of governance and the work of the state, this presentation discusses the changes taking place in philanthropy and the potential implications for education. With the incorporation of business and investment techniques into philanthropy and the possibility for investors and producers to “do well by doing good”, “philanthropy 3.0” is provoking numerous forms of privatization, resulting in the economization of morality and bringing new actors, voices, and visions into the field of education, changing its very meaning and purpose. During the round-table discussion, the original work will be revisited in order to reflect upon the two years since the publication of NSI 04 with an emphasis on shifts that have taken place that may result in the diminishing or intensification of pre-existing trends in the changing typology of global education.
